SUMMARY:The Pelican Intervention Fund 2023 Annual Appeal
DESCRIPTION:Dear Friends of the Pelican Intervention Fund\, \nWe are writing to express our gratitude for your past financial support. This year\, we funded 30 people into 12 Step residential sober living programs. This brings our total to 140 clients that you’ve helped support since our founding in 2015. \nYour donations allow us to continue our mission of supporting men and women struggling with addiction by funding them into residential 12 Step sober living programs. The need is greater than ever. \nAs you may know\, Federal\, State\, and private insurance companies only fund medically based treatment and won’t fund 12 Step faith-based programs. The crisis is getting worse. Last year in Massachusetts alone\, there were 2\,357 confirmed Opiate overdose deaths\, an all-time high in the Commonwealth. \nMone’ Cassier\, (Executive Director of Sober Sisters Recover\,) highlights the impact your donations make and the transformative changes these opportunities provide to those working toward sobriety\, their families\, and our community. \n“The Pelican Intervention Fund has provided 13 scholarships for women entering Sober Sisters Recovery at Malley Farms in Somersworth\, New Hampshire. SSR is a 12-step holistic abstinence based recovery home for women. \nThe Pelican Team have brought dinner to the farm on several occasions and gifts during the holidays. They have also helped at times of need when no one else has been there for our mission and women. They are part of the village that keeps SSR running smoothly. \nWe are blessed regularly by PIF. As the Executive Director \,I have relied on Kim and Steve as a sounding board when the road has gotten bumpy as staying true to the 12 step abstinence based model has not always been easy ( Insurance and Gov’t agencies only provide funding for medically based treatment) We have stuck together and as we continue into our 8th year of servicing women\, we are stronger than ever\, and part of that is due to our support from PIF.” – Mone’ \nIn the spirit of the Thanksgiving Season\, we thank you for your continued support. \nKim & Steve Keene \nThe Pelican Intervention Fund at ECCF\nChecks may be sent to: Essex County Community Foundation\n175 Andover Street | Danvers\, MA 01923 \nCredit Card donations can be made online at pelicaninterventionfund.org\nTax ID # 04-3407816

SUMMARY:Traveling Quilt - Festival of Wreaths and Trees
DESCRIPTION:Join us at the Festival of Wreaths and Trees at the Old South Presbyterian Church on Monday November 23 and Tuesday November 24 to view the Pelican Intervention Fund traveling quilt\, purchase raffle tickets and find out the winner of the quilt on November 23. Proceeds will go to the Pelican Intervention Fund. \nTickets cost $5 each or three for $10. \nAbout the Traveling Quilt\nThe Pelican Intervention Fund quilt will make its way through Greater Newburyport as a symbol of hope for people struggling with addiction. \nThe quilt\, created by Old South Presbyterian Church parishioner Sue Emanuelson\, features a large depiction of the Pelican Intervention Fund’s logo of a soaring pelican\, surrounded by an eclectic border of soft colors and tranquil textures. \nFor this year’s festival\, Emanuelson said she wanted to take her support for the fund a step further. She decided to make the quilt and would like to see it become an emblem for the group’s mission. \n“I’d love for the quilt to be a symbol of hope\, to let people know they aren’t alone and that there’s somebody out there that is available to talk to\,” said Emanuelson\, who also touched on the prevalence of addiction. \n“Probably 100 percent of the time\, when you talk about addiction\, people will say they know someone who is affected\,” Emanuelson said. “There is such a need to make people aware that addiction is very much part of every community. It doesn’t discriminate who it’s going to grab.” \nSince the Pelican Intervention Fund began\, it has raised over $200\,000 to pay for 36 Greater Newburyport residents to participate in long-term residential recovery programs. Keene highlighted the importance of the community in the nonprofit’s efforts\, noting that every dollar the group has collected has come from the kindness of local residents\, businesses and organizations. \n“All these churches and businesses that do these events for us\, we couldn’t do what we’re doing without it because we’re not receiving state funding\,” she said. “Our community is our source of funding\, whether it’s individual people\, churches or businesses. Really\, we’re so grateful.” \nKeene said she thinks traveling to nearby communities with the eye-catching quilt will help the Pelican Intervention Fund further bring awareness to its cause\, which is to help men and women struggling with addiction by providing them with access to long-term residential 12-step programs.

SUMMARY:Traveling Quilt - Amesbury Senior Center
DESCRIPTION:Join us at the Amesbury Senior Center\, Monday October 22 through Friday November 2\, to view the Pelican Intervention Fund traveling quilt and purchase raffle tickets to win it. Proceeds will go to the Pelican Intervention Fund. \nThe winning raffle ticket will be drawn Nov. 23 during the Festival of Wreaths and Trees at Old South Presbyterian Church.

SUMMARY:Performance: I Have This Friend
DESCRIPTION:I Have This Friend is an attempt to deal with the now widespread issue of addiction in all its forms.  The show was originally written by a group of Triton High School students in the 80’s\, and the stories and monologues that form the play are based on their friends’ or their own struggles with addiction.  We want to do as much as we can to raise awareness of the disease of addiction\, and to spread the message of how 12 step programs can save lives.  Directed by Anna Smulowitz\, Choreographed by Linda Zirin\, and performed by middle school and high school students from the area.  All ages welcome\, but adult language is used.
